And we ourselves have turned it into a door way into our homes. It eliminates personal connections with their victims that had once been used to solve the cases. From murder, to rape, to fraud and identity theft crime has become an easier act to commit and a harder case to solve. It gives them a chance to act as someone else to gain access to new victims. The internet has given criminals who were once isolated do to the stigma (A status in society which means that one's behaviors are found to be undesirable due to the fact it goes against social norms.) It has emboldened them. "With billions of human interactions facilitated through craigslist, the incidence of violent crime has been extremely low." They were 4 bodies recently found up in Long Island, also believed to be related to Craigslist ad's.Ĭraigslist has a safety tip section on the site and even admits that violent crimes have been commited due to the access the site allows. He was the first man marked as a ‘Craigslist Killer.' However he is currently trying to appeal on the grounds it was an ‘accident' due to Asperger's (an autism disorder, characterized by difficulty in social interactions.) Michael John Anderson, 19, killed a woman he found through a nanny service ad in 2009. Nor is craigslist the only site that has been used. However Markoff hasn't been the only one who used craigslist to find victims. While Markoff was never convicted, because he committed suicide, the was plenty of evidence against him. Julia Brisman would tell you differently, she was murdered by Philip Markoff who found her through an ad she had placed on Craigslist (Both pictured left.) She wasn't his only victim - Trisha Leffler was robbed at gun point, and another exotic dancer was a victim of attempted robbery. So why on earth do we naively believe that by putting all our personal information on the internet is any safer then leaving our doors unlocked? Because though horrible things happen every day, we always think "well nothing will happen to me." We lock our doors, we have mace in our purses, and we do what we must to protect ourselves and our family.
